Please post your responses in the comments, along with your name and class time.
Elizabeth Diaz, 8am 1. Alcohol and internet addiction are similar in that they both seem to be an outlet for people trying to cope with depression or stressful events in their lives. 2. Alcohol and using the internet might occur in everyday situations and seem harmless, but in certain cases, they turn into full blown addictions. Intro: Who knew attempting to be "cool" could be so harmful and deadly? Cigarette addiction and indoor tanning addiction are both extremely common in the U.S. Usually these addictions start off at a young age and continue long into adulthood. These two activities are lethal when abused. Cigarette and tanning addictions both cause different types of cancer and are legal at a certain age. Though cigarette smoking and tanning are very different, at the same time they are surprisingly alike.
Thesis: 1.Tanning and exercise addicts get chemically hooked by trying to compensate for a lack of confidence caused by a distorted self-image.
Intro: 3.10 percent of competitive runners and body builders are classified as exercise addicts and more than a million people go indoor tanning each day many of which have tanning addictions. These statistics reflect how some people can compulsively and excessive perform both of these actions thus jeopardizing their health. Many of the afflicted mentioned have mental addictions that are similar to other negative habits such as doing drugs. Thesis: Gambling is a mental-health problem and smoking is chemically-based, but addictions to these types of diseases share similar causes, symptoms, and treatments.
Intro: Addictions are considered brain diseases. Drugs can cause dramatic changes to brain functions which result in compulsive behaviors for the substance. Habitual users of a drug utilize the substance occasionally for the effect, but their body will eventually become dependent on it and will cause withdrawal symptoms if the craving is not satisfied. The physical effects of addictions can differ from one another, but the general causes of the problems are alike. Treatments for all kinds of addicts involve therapy and support by the ones around them. Gambling is a mental-health problem and smoking is chemically-based, but addictions to these types of diseases share similar causes, symptoms, and treatments.
Thesis Food and caffeine addictions are similar because both are thought to be relatively harmless and are widely consumed; however, they affect the brain in different ways, and there are nonidentical reasons why people abuse them.
Intro People do not immediately think of food and caffeine as harmful addictions. They are legal, and people consume food and caffeine frequently. What they do not see is that these common goods can be harmful in large amounts and that people can be overly dependent on these commodities. Food and caffeine addictions are similar because both are thought to be relatively harmless and are widely consumed; however, they affect the brain in different ways, and there are nonidentical reasons why people abuse them.
Thesis: Although addictive substances and addictive behavior vary in many ways, they relate by both producing dopamine, feelings of pleasure in the brain.
Intro: "Addiction: the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming,as narcotics, to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma." Nonchemical addictions can be activities such as gambling, eating, or shopping, which can cause effects of bankruptcy, weight gain, or divorce. Chemical addictions, which are primarily seen as brain diseases, include alcoholism, cocaine addiction, heroin addiction, etc. and can cause various effects on an individual's health such as HIV/AIDS, stroke, cardiovascular disease. Although addictive substances and addictive behavior may vary in many ways, they relate by both producing dopamine, feelings of pleasure in the brain.
Thesis Cocaine and chocolate addictions are alike and different in many ways. Both stimulate the brain to give the body pleasure, create withdrawal symptoms, and can lead to health risks.
Introduction “Thinking back to that day when he had first tried coke, Windsor knew then what he knew now, that the only love, the light of his life would ever be cocaine." Windsor was an average man who lived a normal life, that was until his involvement in both dealing and consuming cocaine sent the world he knew into a spiraling downfall. He lost his job, house, family and everything he had once loved. Linda, is a chocoholic. The sugary candy is causing her to gain weight, play with her emotions, and lower her energy level. She wants to seek treatment for her chocolate addiction. At a first glance, readers may think that Linda’s problem is in no way comparable to the story of Windsor, however the two addictions are more alike than one may think. Cocaine and chocolate addictions are alike and different in many ways. Both stimulate the brain to give the body pleasure, create withdrawal symptoms, and can lead to health risks.
1. Relationship addiction and Sex addiction are both similar because are both obsessive behaviors and hinder healthy personal relationships.
2 Intro: Addictions can develop from various behaviors, and that includes sex and love. Someone who has no healthy relationship boundaries, may become immediately emotionally and sexually involved and attached to people without even knowing them. These types of people tend to confuse love with neediness, and physical and sexual attraction with pity or no initial interest at all. They also feel empty and incomplete when they are alone, even though they usually fear intimacy and commitment, and will continually search for relationships or sexual contacts. Love and sex addicts use sex and emotional involvement to manipulate and control others, or become powerless or seriously distracted by emotional or sexual obsessions. They willingly stay enslaved to emotional dependency, romantic infatuation, or compulsive sexual activities until their lives become uncontrollable. Both relationship addiction and sex addiction are similar obsessive behaviors and hinder healthy personal relationships.
Thesis: Video game addiction and work addiction both cause suffering due to people not realizing how bad it can get, and both are behavioral addictions that seem normal.
Intro: Drugs or alcohol are not the only things that are considered to be addictions. There are addictions that stem from behavior, such as work and video games. These may seem harmless at first, but in reality, they harm many lives on a daily basis. They cause people to ignore everyone around them and leave them in their own little world. People usually do not even notice they have a problem because of how normal working and playing games feel. Video game addiction and work addiction both cause suffering due to people not realizing how bad it can get, and both are behavioral addictions that seem normal.
Thesis: Vide game addicts spend countless hours attempting to satisfy their needs to play video games and work addicts will not rest until they accomplish everything and more. As much as the motives in which these addictions grow seem different in all aspects, in the end, both of these addictions actually take away the personal and social lives of the people who are addicted.
Intro: Workaholics in the effort to make more money, over achieve, or ignore their personal issues work nonstop to the extent that it is not good for their health. Video game addicts perservere in their games to beat the highest score, continue their role-playing lives in the fantasy world, or run away from social lives that they cannot adjust to. Workaholics to an extent get things done whearas video game addicts sit around playing video games but these two addicts expereience the same effects. In the end, both will suffer health related issues and loss of social lives.
Thesis: Even though tanning might seem more deliberate than love addiction, both result from a person’s need to relieve his or her emotions.
Intro: An addiction for tanning requires voluntary behavior, it cannot be done subconsciously because the act itself must be carried out by an individual. On the contrary, love addiction seems to be more inevitable and done subconsciously. Despite their differences, both produce the same brain activity and withdrawal symptoms as those of cocaine and other drugs. Aside from this correlation, a single force drives these two conditions to become addictive--emotions. Both are expressed in an individual when it comes to a disorder in moods or self-esteem.
Thesis: Although cigarettes are often seen as a more dangerous substance in comparison to caffeine, they are both seriously detrimental to their health once users are addicted and difficult to quit.
Intro: Being addicted to substances means to rely on it, even if it is unwillingly. No matter how seriously harmful the addiction may be to the physical health of the addict, it can also be mentally detrimental for those to be heavily depend on anything. The addictions can vary from certain foods to activities, but the most dangerous ones are the ones to drugs. Different types of drugs may be viewed with various levels of risk, but they are all harmful. Although cigarettes are often seen as a more dangerous substance in comparison to caffeine, they are both seriously detrimental to the health once users are addicted and become difficult to quit.
Thesis: Despite both being labeled with the word addiction, cocaine and internet addictions have very little in common.
Intro: Whether it is hopping in and out of chat rooms, browsing the news, or simply sitting in front of a computer, internet addiction can become an extremely time-consuming habit. But it is just that: a habit. On the other hand, an addiction to cocaine has a physical effect on the brain. It is truly an addiction, and breaking a cocaine addiction comes with the depression and malaise of withdrawal. Despite both being labeled with the word addiction, cocaine and internet addictions have very little in common.
Tony 8am 1. (Thesis) exercise and sex addictions have similarities that include the loss of control and interest, risky behavior, and an intense craving for more.
2. (Intro) Imagine a person who thinks only about sex and nothing else all the time. An insatiable hunger that no matter how much sex a person has, it will not be enough. Knowing this, it is safe to say that one may suffer from a sex addiction. similarly, exercise can have the same affects as a sex addiction. Both, exercise and sex addiction, show characteristics contain risky behavior, an intense craving, and loss of control and interest.
Christine Nham 8am Thesis: Both cocaine and shopping addictions create similar feelings of euphoria that is not expected of such opposite problems.
Intro: Clothes and drugs can come in designer brands and do not come cheap. Victims of cocaine and shopping addictions suffer from constantly needing their respective vices and will do anything to get what they think they need. Although cocaine takes a toll more on health, shopping can destroy financial security. Both cocaine and shopping addictions create similar feelings of euphoria that is not expected of such opposite problems.
1. Thesis: Cigarette and sex addiction both share similar traits because they both affect a part of the brain but cigarette addiction is much more harmful to your health than sex addiction.
2. Introduction: An addiction is physical dependence on a particular activity or substance which can be either a chemical or a physical addiction. Two such addictions are cigarette and sex addictions. Both of these are very similar and can cause harm to one's health and can eventually lead to damaging one's entire life. Cigarette and sex addiction both share similar traits because they both affect a part of the brain but cigarette addiction is much more harmful to your health than sex addiction.
Jon 10am Thesis: Cigarettes and junk food have a lot in common, including their chemical effects on the brain and their habit forming natures.
Intro: A man sits on his couch watching TV and smoking a cigarette. Someone may look at him and say "You're addicted," because it is general knowledge that cigarettes are addictive. If a different man sits on a couch eating from a bag of potato chips, it is unlikely that anyone will comment on his eating habits. Why not? Many people eat potato chips, but is it unthinkable that they would be addictive? The man eating chips can be just as addicted as the man smoking.
Thesis: Alcoholism and workaholism provide similarities in their origin as well as physical and social effects that cause negative consequences despite different habits and nuanced symptoms.
Intro: Although an addiction to work can be seen as a virtue to an observer, there are many aspects where workaholism resembles the obvious vice of an addiction to alcohol. Alcoholism and workaholism provide similarities in their origin as well as physical and social effects that cause negative consequences despite different habits and nuanced symptoms. Gradual causes of these addictions, harmful or socially diminishing habits, and withdrawal symptoms are expressed through both obsessions to a similar degree.
1. Thesis: Cocaine and video game addiction are both compulsive behaviors that are uncontrollable due to its impulsivity and can cause pleasure due to the neurochemistry of the addict, however, the dependence that develops from each addiction varies psychologically and physiologically.
2. Intro: Cocaine and video games may seem like polar opposites, but the extensive use of either of these things can lead to addiction. Though the addiction and dependence developed from each of these objects may be influenced by differing factors, the behaviors leading to addiction may be quite similar. Cocaine and video game addiction are both compulsive behaviors that are uncontrollable due to its impulsivity and can cause pleasure due to the neurochemistry of the addict, however, the dependence that develops from each addiction varies psychologically and physiologically.
1. Thesis: While not as obvious as one might first assume, sex and drug addiction have many similarities. This includes the fact that they both become something that people become dependent on and need in order to cope with certain problems in their lives.
2.Conclusion: Many underestimate the harm an addiction of any form can do to a person. An addicted brain alone is physically and chemically different than that of a normal brain. It is not only a psychological problem, it is also a physical problem that needs to be further researched in order to find better cures. Sex and drug addiction are one of the top researched addictions and cures for these problems are advancing. While not as easy to overcome, it is possible and necessary especially when it becomes a huge obstacle in ones everyday life.
Thesis: Nicotine addiction and caffeine addiction are very similar.
Intro: Most people understand that smoking cigarettes is an addictive and harmful act. However, drinking coffee is harmful and addictive as well. In fact, cigarette addiction and caffeine addiction are very similar. Both caffeine and cigarettes are ingested. They are also both chemical addictions. Also, they both very compulsive.
Thesis: Opiate addiction and video game addiction are similar in the sense that they both are triggered from wanting an "escape from the real world, can be detrimental to a person's health, and show withdrawal symptoms when removed.
Intro: Flashing lights surround a dimly lit face in a dark room as the zombie-like expression is unbroken despite his mother's calls for him for dinner. These are the qualities of a video game addict and are not unlike those of an opiate addict. Both individuals will do almost anything to get a fix of their addiction, even under dangerous circumstances. These are both addictions that are triggered by a wanting to "escape" from reality and go into a fantasy world, or a euphoric one. They both also are detrimental to the health of the addict, as their social lives are both impaired by their addiction and result in a damaged psychological state. Both addictions can also show psychological withdrawal symptoms when taken away from the addict their addiction.
1. Both crack, the processed form of cocaine, and caffeine, which most people intake almost everyday, are addictive stimulants taken because of the increase in energy and alertness they have on the body.
Intro
Addiction can come from infinite sources. Although when most people are asked about the causes of addiction, they only think of the hard drug abuses like methamphetamine, heroine, and alcohol, etc.. Yet, people can be dependent to such items as innocent as chocolate, coffee, and even the Internet. Still, with this knowledge many would argue that the less harmful drugs do not have nearly the same effects or dangers as the harder ones. People would be surprised to know just how similar some so called harmless drugs are to the hard ones. Like crack and caffeine. Not many people would consider caffeine to be injurous, but just about anyone would consider crack to be deadly. Both crack, the processed form of cocaine, and caffeine, which most people intake almost everyday, are addictive stimulants taken because of the increase in energy and alertness they have on the body.
Marie Biaggi 10 am 1. Thesis: Cocaine and Internet addicts alike have difficulty admitting that they suffer from a compulsion that hinders their personal relationships; it is only when a crisis occurs as a result of their abuse, that they seek treatment or someone else seeks it for them. 2. A tightening of a band, restricting circulation, the pinching of a needle, a suThe pressing of a power button, the clicking of a mouse, typing on a computer keyboard, spending hours in the same chair, a lost sense of reality and a feeling of happiness; the tightening of a band, restricting circulation, the pinching of a needle, a sudden rush, a lost sense of reality and a feeling of happiness. An Internet addict turns on his computer and opens up the web for the same reason a cocaine addict pulls out his needle and injects his/herself: each one pursues an exhilaration. These people do not believe they have any sort of problem; their actions are habitual, ordinary, and harmless. Then, their wife leaves them or they find their good friend beside them, dead. Cocaine and Internet addicts alike have difficulty admitting that they suffer from a compulsion that hinders their personal relationships; it is only when a crisis occurs as a result of their abuse, that they seek treatment or someone else seeks it for them.
Ted Lee 10 am 1. (Thesis) Although exercise and heroin can both be destructive and produce a high in the user, exercise addiction stems from societal pressure while heroin addiction derives from physical dependence and tolerance. 2. (Intro) An addict injects a needle into his bleeding arm. After the high wears off, he will experience nausea, aching bones, muscle cramps, and other flu like symptoms. Another addict just finished a five mile run despite prior obligations and against doctor recommendations. Both addicts are willing to put their health and life on the line to satisfy their needs. Although these addictions can both be addictive and produce a high in the user, exercise addiction stems from societal pressure while heroin addiction derives from physical dependence and tolerance.
Steven Tarkington, 10 a.m. 1. Marijuana addiction is a substance addiction whereas gaming addiction is a behavioral addiction, both addictions are not readily seen as addictive, but they can both cause serious social development problems. 2. Addiction is generally thought as doing something in excess and is usually referred to in collaboration with drug use. In actuality, an addiction is the uncontrollable compulsion to seek and use whatever it is the person is addicted to. Most addictions are believed to have a chemically element sense addictions are so closely related to drugs. However, anyone can become addicted to anything whether or not there is a chemically element involved. Like in the case of marijuana addiction and gaming addiction. Marijuana although it is an illicit drug is not seen to have anything chemically addictive in it, so it is not usually seen as an addictive drug. Gaming addiction is not seen as addictive because it is an everyday hobby for many people, and has no chemical element. Even without chemically elements, both addictions have psychological elements and other elements that propel it. The negative impacts of both addictions are not on the level of a hardcore drug like cocaine or meth, but they can cause serious social development problems and other life style issues.
Thesis: Video game and pornography addictions are both unlikely addictions that effect the lives of many people.
Intro: Many people are lead to believe that addictions are categorized by substances that must be smoked, injected, or inhaled into the body, however there are uncommon addictions other than drugs that effect the lives of many people on a daily basis. Video game addiction is a problem that effects many people from many ages. Porn addiction is also an unhealthy issue that breaks the lives of many normal people. Video game and pornography addiction are both unlike conditions that produce similar disorders that effect the health of many people.
1.Thesis: Although the roots of Sex and Alcohol addiction differ, both fulfill the same pleasure centers that disrupts the daily life of people due to the dependency it creates and the relationships it destroys.
2.Intro: Alcohol is a substance and sex is an act. Substance abuse is considered a worse addiction due to the actual disruption of the chemical balance in the brain. However, psychological addiction may in fact be a bigger threat due to the mental addiction that it creates. In order to stop a chemical addiction, one would remain absent from the chemical, but how does one rid of a addiction that is rooted in the brain? Both addictions trigger the pathways that stimulate the reward center of the brain. An addictive lifestyle changes the interactions and relationships between people.
1. Coffee and sex addiction are both similar in the way that the brain sees them as "comforting" and they are both detrimental the to social, academic, and financial aspects of everyday life.
Many have argued that addictions are only chemical and do not
Nikki Lieu 10 am 1. Thesis: Food and sex are alike in that they are both necessary for human survival and reproduction.
2. There are different types of addiction that satisfy people in certain ways. It is the state of being enslaved to a certain practice that eventually controls the body and mind, forming an unhealthy habit that can possibly lead to trauma. Food and sex addiction in cases is used for pleasure, rather than for healthy reasons. Food and sex are alike in that they are both necessary for human survival and reproduction.
Thesis: Sex and video game addiction is similar because both are not very detrimental to a person's physical or mental health.
Intro: Addiction has always had a negative connotation. When someone is labeled as an addict, others would assume that they would addicted to some habit that has severe consequences. Many addictions are definitive because they affect people in drastic ways, both physically and mentally. However, there are other addictions such as video games and sex where the severity of consequences is less apparent. Both of these habits are common every day practices and is not as easy to identify.
1. Coffee and sex addiction are both similar in the way that the brain sees them as "comforting" and they are both detrimental the to social, academic, and financial aspects of everyday life.
Many have argued that addictions are only chemical and do not affect a person psychologically and emotionally.
Apparently I'm having trouble leaving the entire comment on here...

1. Coffee and sex addiction are both similar in the way that the brain sees them as "comforting" and they are both detrimental the to social, academic, and financial aspects of everyday life.
Many have argued that addictions are only chemical and do not affect a person psychologically and emotionally. Sex addiction is a rare but serious disease that has the potential to ruin people's lives. Coffee addiction is chemical, and has can be very harmful to one's body, but the consequences are not said to be as serious as sex addiction's consequences are.
Victoria Garcia 10 am 1) Shopping and alcohol addiction affect the body differently but affect personal lives in a similar way. 2) The mental need to have something can drive people to compulsive actions and lead to undesirable results. Shopaholics need to buy to fulfill their materialistic needs but end up in debt from their excessive buying. Alcoholics need alcohol to avoid the troubles of their real world and end up having health issues. Shopping and alcohol addiction affect the body differently but affect personal lives in a similar way.
Mary Gao 10am 1) Plastic surgery addiction and exercising addiction are both similar in that they are ways for people to believe that they are improving their physical images. 2)Mirrors and reflecting image are ubiquitous in our surroundings. Waking up every morning and seeing an image of oneself can either be positive or negative. For many women, and possibly a few men, they see a distorted image of themselves. They find at least one feature on their body that dissatisfies them. These people, with low self esteem, turn to activities that become harmful after repeating them too many times. Some of these activities are exercising and getting plastic surgery done. Exercising addiction and plastic surgery addiction are both similar in that they are ways for people to believe that they are improving their physical images.
Emma Manley 10AM 1. An addiction to tanning beds and lighting up a cigarette are both things that are known to cause physical harm to the body, but are each abused by countless of people every day. 2. Intro: Enough research has been made to show that this certain act can cause cancer. Doing this multiple times or even once can create an addiction to something that is known to be unhealthy and even fatal. Both of these statements could accurately describe fake tanning and cigarette use. Even as studies find how harmful both fake tanning and cigarette use is for the human body, many people choose to participate any way. The main reason: they are addicted to it. An addiction to tanning beds and lighting up a cigarette are both things that are known to cause physical harm to the body, but are each abused by countless of people every day.
1.) Though shopping and eating addiction have differences that are very distinct they share many similar consequences that are associated with addictions.
2.) Going out with friend to eat and shop seem like a perfect way to spend a day and have fun but for some this two activities are difficult to do in everyday situations without going overboard. Shopping addictions though not officially recognized as health disorders pose serious problems to people who inhibit them. Eating addictions are recognized as actual health issues and bring many burdens to people lives. Shopping and eating addictions are similar in many ways in the fact that they bring financial as well as personal problem to their victims.

ReplyDeleteThesis: Even though tanning might seem more deliberate than love addiction, both result from a person’s need to relieve his or her emotions.

ReplyDeleteThesis: Although cigarettes are often seen as a more dangerous substance in comparison to caffeine, they are both seriously detrimental to their health once users are addicted and difficult to quit.

ReplyDeleteThesis: Despite both being labeled with the word addiction, cocaine and internet addictions have very little in common.

ReplyDeleteThesis: Cigarettes and junk food have a lot in common, including their chemical effects on the brain and their habit forming natures.

ReplyDeleteThesis: Alcoholism and workaholism provide similarities in their origin as well as physical and social effects that cause negative consequences despite different habits and nuanced symptoms.

ReplyDelete1.

ReplyDelete1.

ReplyDeleteThesis: Opiate addiction and video game addiction are similar in the sense that they both are triggered from wanting an "escape from the real world, can be detrimental to a person's health, and show withdrawal symptoms when removed.

ReplyDelete1.

ReplyDelete1.

ReplyDelete1.Thesis: Although the roots of Sex and Alcohol addiction differ, both fulfill the same pleasure centers that disrupts the daily life of people due to the dependency it creates and the relationships it destroys.

ReplyDeleteThesis: Sex and video game addiction is similar because both are not very detrimental to a person's physical or mental health.
