Tuesday In-Class Exercise

To continue our early discussion of literary analysis, please go to this page: http://www.poets.org/page.php/prmID/200

Pick a "subject" area that interests you, and then pick a poem that you find interesting on the following page.  I suggest choosing one of the more recent pieces, but whatever interests you works for me.

Read the poem carefully.  Consider all of its elements: the imagery, the word choices, the ideas presented, the line breaks, the rhyme scheme (or lack thereof), the title, etc.  How does the poem explore the "theme" you see?

Write your response in a paragraph in the comments here, making sure to include your name and class time.  This is due by 5 pm today.

Citing sources

As you know, you have to use (at least) two sources in this paper.  In doing so, you need to cite those sources when using information from them.  Please see this link for thorough information on citing sources:

Pay particular attention to "Using Research," and then once you've selected the appropriate type of format (MLA, APA, or Chicago), be sure to carefully follow those guidelines.

This week....

Just to give everyone a quick rundown, here's the plan for this week...

Tuesday:  You will be coming to class knowing your topic (and subjects) for the second paper.  In class, we will complete a building blocks exercise, as well as discussing integrating sources into your writing.  Importantly, we will also be assigning groups for Thursday's workshop, so it will be important to be in class on Tuesday...

Thursday:  Workshop of rough drafts--we will be taking a new approach on this (directions will be given on Tuesday).

...and your final draft is due next Tuesday!

Reminders: What to turn in for your first paper

Tomorrow (Tuesday), you have to have two copies of your rough draft (and the reader).  Then, for Thursday, you need to turn in the entire portfolio of work.  That includes:

1.  The final draft--stapled on its own.

2.  In a separate group (stapled or paperclipped): the two rough drafts from workshop, the in-class building blocks exercise, and the reading responses.

Also, don't forget the criteria I am using to grade, which includes: your ability to create an effective critique (including all areas of discussion required of the genre, as we went over in class); your skill with the writing itself (think to our discussion of "tips for writing," as well as academic tone and grammar; evidence of thought.

Remember for Thursday...

Tomorrow (Thursday), we will complete the "building blocks" for your essay--the critique.  Please bring the course reader, and be ready to write a lot in class.  Also, come to class knowing with of the Unit One readings you will critique for your paper.

The in-class writing will be intensive, but will put you in a good place to complete a rough draft.

After the writing process, we will share our work in an effort to maximize our ideas...

Tuesday In-Class Exercise

In Thursday's class, we will spend the majority of our time working on the "meat" of our essays: our critique and supporting points.  However, it is important that your paper have an engaging opening and conclusion, as well.

To prepare for our work on Thursday, I would like you to begin considering what makes for a good start in an essay.  Please complete this exercise, and have it posted by noon.

In the comments section, please write:

1. Your name and class time.

2.  Based on your experience writing--and reading--essays, what do you think are some good ways to start a paper?  Be specific, and explain why you think this/these are a good idea.

3.  Hop online and locate at least one web site that offers suggestions for introductions and/or conclusions in papers.  The site should be credible (we'll go over this in class).  Post the link in the comments.

4.  What is one thing you found useful or interesting in the linked site?  Explain.

The goal here is to create a clearinghouse of introduction/conclusion tips for everyone, while, at the same time, learning actively for ourselves.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions at all!

What's coming up this week...

I hope you've all had a nice weekend...here's a quick preview of what will come up this week.

TUESDAY:  Please read the remaining essays in "Unit One," and write a reading response.  Be prepared to write about, and discuss, the various essays in class.  Our session will start with my long-delayed "top ten" list of writing tips; we will then break down the readings in groups; finally, you will explain which essay interests you most (in an online writing exercise).

THURSDAY:  Come to class knowing which essay you will critique for your paper.  In class, we will complete a series of "building blocks" designed to create your rough draft.

(And next week, the rough draft--two copies--is due on Tuesday, and the final is due on Thursday).

Tuesday In-Class Exercise

I think it would be counterproductive to go through another "catch all" grammar quiz in class, but I don't want to close the book on that sort of work just yet.  Today, you will complete one more exercise to fine tune your understanding of grammar, but we will complete it online in hopes of making it more personalized to your needs/interests.

On it, you will see (on the left) a series of links for types of exercises.  Look them over, and decide which ones will help you the most.  Then, please complete three of them.  In the comments section below, please write:

I will be giving you class time to complete this, so I expect it to be done within an hour of the class time end.  (Meaning, for my 8 am students, it is due by 11 am; for my 10 am students, it is due by 1 pm).
