I think it would be counterproductive to go through another "catch all" grammar quiz in class, but I don't want to close the book on that sort of work just yet. Today, you will complete one more exercise to fine tune your understanding of grammar, but we will complete it online in hopes of making it more personalized to your needs/interests.
Please go to this site: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/exercises/
On it, you will see (on the left) a series of links for types of exercises. Look them over, and decide which ones will help you the most. Then, please complete three of them. In the comments section below, please write:
1. Your name
2. Which three quizzes you completed.
3. How did you do on them?
4. Your class time.
I will be giving you class time to complete this, so I expect it to be done within an hour of the class time end. (Meaning, for my 8 am students, it is due by 11 am; for my 10 am students, it is due by 1 pm).
Thanks!

Surprisingly, i did quite well on all of my exercises. Reading the comma section in The Writer's reference definitely helped me with the comma exercise.

ReplyDeleteThe three quizzes that I completed in OWL writing exercise were Adjective or Adverb Exercise Quotation Mark Exercise and Comma Exercise 1 . On Adjective or Adverb I did well on and had no problems. The Quotation Mark Exercise was also easy. The one that was most difficult and i actually had problems was the Comma Exercise because I was was unsure weather or not a comma was appropriate. Other than that the rest of the exercise were fairly simple.

ReplyDeleteI completed exercises:
-Comma Exercise 2
-Quotations
-Adjective or Adverb
My results surprised me I only missed a small amount of commas although I was fairly confident in my answers. I got a perfect score on quotations and only did Adjective or Adverb because those are my favorite and were super fun actually.

Quiz one: Apostrophes
I did surprisingly bad on this one because I missed very minor mistakes that added up. The quiz kept using "week" as a possessive, which confused me.
Quiz 2: Quotation Marks
I did very well on this one, missing only one due to confusion with the title of a magazine.
Quiz 3: Sentence Structure- Eliminating Words
I did very well on this one. This came as a surprise to me because the biggest problem I have is being too wordy so the results of this quiz made me feel more comfortable with myself.

ReplyDelete1. Punctuation Exercises: Commas
I did good on this test, I only missed a couple, which was surprising since I thought I would've missed more.
2. Sentence Structure: Run-ons, Comma Splices, and Fused Sentences
I did well on this one too, I didn't really know how I would do on this one, but it turned out to be pretty easy,
3. Grammar: Tense Consistency
I didn't do that great on this one, I missed almost half, but I expected this because tense consistency is one of my major difficulties.

I didn't do so hot on this exercise. I thought it was easy, but I need to go back and review whats the difference between the two and when do we use each one.
Subject and Verb Agreement:
I did really well on this one. I only missed a few but I came to realize that a way to help me agree the subject with the verb.
Eliminating Wordiness, exercise 2:
I felt like i did pretty well on these rewritten sentences. I eliminated some words to reduce wordiness and made the sentences flow easier.

ReplyDeleteI did Comma excercise 1, Identifying Independent and dependent clauses, and Basic Punctuation.
On the first one I got 13 out of 20 right; on the second one I got them all right, but there are numerous of ways that they can be written; and the last one I got 12 out of 20 correct, which was surprising because I didn't think commas, parentheses, and dashes were so confusing.

3. Prepositions of Direction: To, On (to), In (to)
I performed fairly well on the quizzes. (At the above poster, Superman does GOOD, I do WELL). The spelling exercise was easy because I could just tell when something had been spelled wrong. The Eliminating Wordiness exercise was the hardest of the three for me. It wasn't a very direct exercise - there were many possibilities for rewriting the sentences. I could rewrite them, but not always in the same fashion that was demonstrated in the 'Answers' section. The third exercise, prepositions, was almost too easy. It's like the first exercise that I did on spelling: the correct answers just seem right in my head. "3. Are the boys still swimming ______ the pool?" The boy most likely did not swim onto or toward the pool.

3. I did good overall. It was kind of hard deciding whether or not to write out the numbers in words or not. The one I found most challenging was the Commas vs. Semicolons exercise. Sometimes I did not know if I needed a comma in a certain place or not.The Apostrophes section was the one that I did the best in.
